Finding confidence and belonging at Youth Club

When she first started coming to Youth Club, this homeschooled young person didn’t know anyone. Like many young people trying something new, those first sessions felt daunting, but with encouragement and support from a youth worker, she gradually began to build friendships and feel part of the group.

Now, Youth Club is something she looks forward to every week. She enjoys spending time with friends, listening to music, chatting, and visiting the tuck shop. For her, Youth Club offers something different from family life or homeschool groups—a space where she can simply relax, be herself, and enjoy being with other young people without the pressures of everyday life.

As her friendships have grown, so has her confidence. The social skills and positive experiences she has gained through Youth Club have helped her feel more confident in other social situations too.

The welcoming environment created by the youth workers and volunteers has been central to this journey. She describes the difference they make:

“It’s really nice when you first walk in and they have a massive smile on their faces. It is very comforting, and they always ask how you are, so immediately you know it’s a safe environment.”

For this young person, Youth Club has become much more than a place to spend an evening—it is a place where she feels accepted, valued, and able to belong.
