A place to belong every weekend

A 12-year-old young person splits his time between two family homes, living primarily with his mother and spending alternate weekends with his father and stepfamily. While he does not attend school in this area, he visits at weekends and regularly attends the SNYE youth club.

He is an active and enthusiastic member, particularly enjoying football and basketball sessions. He regularly joins in games and tournaments, building positive relationships with both peers and youth workers. He also values the social side of the provision, including spending time with others his age and enjoying small treats from the tuck shop.

The youth club has provided a vital sense of belonging in a community where he might otherwise feel disconnected. Despite only attending at weekends, he has developed strong friendships and is a well-known and valued member of the group.

Sessions support his independence and provide regular opportunities to socialise in a safe and welcoming environment. They also help him stay physically active and engaged during his time away from his main home. Importantly, the provision has had a positive impact on his willingness and enthusiasm to spend time with his non-resident parent. At a stage when some young people may feel reluctant to split their time, he consistently looks forward to attending, often asking about the youth club as soon as he arrives.

Overall, the youth club plays a key role in helping him feel settled, supported and happy across both home environments, benefiting not only him but his wider family.
